1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
3/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 large egg
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup boiling water
For the Chocolate Mousse:

1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
1 cup heavy cream
2 tablespoons sugar
For Layering:

Additional whipped cream
Chocolate shavings or curls
Method:

For the cake, preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Combine dry ingredients in a large bowl. Add egg, milk, oil, and vanilla; mix until smooth. Stir in boiling water (batter will be thin). Pour into a greased pan and bake for 30-35 minutes. Cool and crumble.
For the mousse, melt chocolate chips gently. Cool slightly. Whip cream with sugar until soft peaks form. Fold in melted chocolate until no streaks remain.
To assemble the trifle, layer crumbled cake, chocolate mousse, and whipped cream in a trifle bowl. Repeat layers until ingredients are used up, finishing with a layer of whipped cream.
Garnish with chocolate shavings. Chill before serving to let the flavors meld.
